In Kitsune, we continue to translate and transform the traditional Japanese tattoo art form of Wabori into playing card style, retaining as well as enhancing many of the interesting and delightful features we had in Sumi Playing Cards. The focus of Kitsune centers around the fox spirit, a staple in Japanese folklore. We scoured many different sources of folktales, stories and myths about fox spirits and selected a few well-known ones as sources of inspiration for the characters in the court cards. Kistune continues to serve as a homage to Wabori and faithfully represents the visual nuances and quality that is the hallmark of Japanese traditional tattoo once again, creating a visual playing card masterpiece like no other, a masterpiece that weaves fantastical stories of begone time with modern playing card aesthetics.

Hello! My name is Sviatoslav Pashchuk and this is my new classic poker size deck dedicated to the Mexico’s heroic struggle for independence.

The idea of creating the deck bearing the spirit of a freedom loving country has come to my mind long ago. It has combined not only the modern attributes of Mexico, but also its old history and traditions of the Incas and the Maya. The nation of any country is formed and is strengthened in the course of the struggle for its independence, this is why I decided to choose revolution as the main theme and added exotic elements and traditions of the old culture, in which today’s Mexico has grown.

My desire was to make this deck more graphic, similar to the old money used in Mexico in the 17th century. From there I have “borrowed” the font and decorative elements, and added ancient patterns of the Incas and the Maya. Face cards have large number of symbols. Each suit has unique armament of that time, the ancient Incas symbol, which symbolizes the suit, Mexico most recognizable plant, an integral part of the national cuisine. The center of each card contains Maya golden calendar and decorative plate with an eagle holding a snake in the beak (the same eagle is depicted on the coat of arms of Mexico), surrounded with 31 stars, symbolizing the states of Mexico. I’ve been working on this deck for more than 7 months, and each element is well-balanced and worked out. All the drawings were originally sketched on paper, as this is my favorite way to draw, and then scanned and transformed into digital format.

Aurelians are so intricate that we had to employ specialists to experiment with different weights of foil and ink to create this modern artifact. Own a piece of playing card history today. 270 AD: the Price of Loyalty Aurelian's first bold move into power was to take control over the imperial mint. Forging gold coins to donate to his troops, guaranteeing their loyalty. We've captured that narrative with a strong border topped with his signature coin, drawing inwards to a medallion-inspired centre piece that looks hypnotic in your hands. 271 AD: Rags to Riches Emperor Aurelian, born to humble beginnings, understood the people's wants. Upon rising to power he cancelled the people's private debts to the treasury. Each courtier card has been draped in gold and fully re-worked to stand proudly with the powerful design. The faces have also been completely re-sculpted to create a timeless pip arrangement, whilst still remaining recognizable for magic. 272 AD: Paid in Blood Exquisite detail meets historical significance. Aurelian's custom ace is a symbol for the "Soldier-Emperor". His reign, though short, was marked by bloody and glorious conquest. Gold ink swords, whips and throwing spears drape themselves over the stunning spade. It's the most important card in a deck and it's the only one with golden pips. 273 AD: Power and Glory Aurelian was a celebrated military leader, enjoying amongst his titles the moniker "Restitutor Orbis; Restorer of the World, claiming back much of the previously lost Roman Empire. The Jokers are a homage to the Tally-Ho cowboys we've all come to love. These soldiers stand resolute ready to defend an empire...Or to overthrow one.
