Tempo Playing Cards are inspired by the golden age of jazz. In the 1920s and 30s a new style of music rapidly gained popularity in the United States and artists like Bessie Smith, Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday became household names.

Designed by Michael Mateyko, each card features an Art Deco style illustration that celebrates the spirit of improvisation and musical expression.

Printed by The United States Playing Card Company on our proprietary thin-stock, each deck of Tempo playing cards come packaged in a screen-printed, embossed and foil stamped tuck case.

Great care was taken with regard to each detail, breathing fresh new life into these two historical decks. Together we strive to recreate beautiful but yet forgotten pieces of playing cards past and possibly bring them back to life. This deck depicts the complete legendary Roman legionary armor, as well as the sparse armor, inspired by Legionaries but pared down for individual combat.

Created by Jody Eklund, Legionary captures the legend of the Roman citizen, once conscripted into a Roman Legion, and now turned Gladiator. Upon the face cards you will find fierce and fearless faces of men and women who risked their own harm for the pleasure and entertainment of the Colosseum crowds. “Fortune favors the brave,” and these gladiators need no lesson in courage!
