Sumi Playing Cards - Kitsune is Card Experiment's 2nd collaboration with ToKMR Graphics, following our highly successful Sumi Playing Cards campaign.

In Kitsune, we continue to translate and transform the traditional Japanese tattoo art form of Wabori into playing card style, retaining as well as enhancing many of the interesting and delightful features we had in Sumi Playing Cards. The focus of Kitsune centers around the fox spirit, a staple in Japanese folklore. We scoured many different sources of folktales, stories and myths about fox spirits and selected a few well-known ones as sources of inspiration for the characters in the Court cards.

Kistune continues to serve as an homage to Wabori and faithfully represents the visual nuances and quality that is the hallmark of the Japanese traditional tattoo once again. This creates a visual playing card masterpiece like no other -- a masterpiece that weaves fantastical stories of begone times with modern playing card aesthetics.

Ono, an inhabitant of Mino (says an ancient Japanese legend of A.D. 545), spent the seasons longing for his ideal of female beauty. He met her one evening on a vast moor and married her. Simultaneously with the birth of their son, Ono’s dog was delivered of a pup which as it grew up became more and more hostile to the lady of the moors. She begged her husband to kill it, but he refused. At last one day the dog attacked her so furiously that she lost courage, resumed vulpine shape, leaped over a fence and fled. “You may be a fox”, Ono called after her, “but you are the mother of my son and I love you. Come back when you please; you will always be welcome”. So every evening she stole back and slept in his arms.

Dead Decks designed by artist Florey is a deck based on an overall theme of life and death. Each face card depics a character life, and afterlife when flipping the card 180°.

Created as a pair of decks, Anubis and Osiris, these decks from artist Steve Minty was funded on KickStarter by 2,154 backers who pledged $93,907.  The Anubis deck featured a black tuck and card background, while the Osiris deck used a deep blue tone.  The tucks are with gold foil and embossed with a custom seal, while the cards also have gold foil on the back.

With a certain personally beloved series broadcasting its final season this year, I was inspired to create these decks as an homage while giving it a spin in my style and interpretation. To me, the aspect I wanted to focus on were the diverse "families" depicted in the series as opposed to individual heroes, villains and so forth. Each house has their own agendas and values that they live (or die, a lot) by and I couldn't help but find that intriguing. I thought to myself, how could I represent each family visually and voila, "Ascension Playing Cards" came into existence.

With DAMASK we reached a technical and aesthetical limit in the number of different foils that can be used.

It was time for a more sophisticated challenge:

To go back to the basics and using just one foil -and a lot of imagination- to create a deck of spectacular luxury, an absolute must for every serious collector!

The play of light on a background made of incredibly thin lines that imitate the weaving in renaissance silk fabrics, creates an amazing 3D effect that no photo can capture.

A true collector's item with gold and silver foil on the back of all cards, printed on black/bronze metallic stock. Only 130 "Treasure" decks were printed and the rarity of the stock along with the beauty of the two perfectly registered foils justify the name!

In Sanctus, Lotrek continued his byzantine religious theme and used techniques from his Liturgy deck. On the back and faces he used both white opaque ink as well as foil. To create a simple but luxurious look he went with a full bleed back, using two different shades of gold on a metallic bronze stock. For the card coating he came up with a new and improved formula which should improve handling for cardistry. On the Tuck, he went with the same design as the backs wrapping all six sides with a combination of matte and shiny gold foils for the back ground, with black foil for the lettering. The Tucks are also all numbered.
