From 1913-1922, Frank Lloyd Wright designed and built the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, Japan. For decades this landmark served as an architectural icon for the city, during which time it survived several devastating earthquakes until it was demolished in 1968. Fortunately, the main entrance and hotel lobby were preserved and reconstructed in 1968 at the Museum Meiji-mura, an open-air architectural museum and theme park near Nagoya in Aichi prefecture, Japan. In celebration of the centennial anniversary of the Imperial Hotel, the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation has partnered with Art of Play to design a commemorative pack of playing cards based on Wright's original drawings. Meticulously Illustrated by Ethan Kowaleski in close collaboration with Brad Fulton and Dan & Dave Buck.

The desire to wield true magical powers is a wish as old as mankind itself. One of the most well-known stories about this fantasy is "Der Zauberlehrling", better known as The Sorcerer's Apprentice. Written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and originally published in 1797, the story stands the test of time.

Exactly 225 years later, Penguin Magic is proud to present our tribute to the original poem, crafted into an ultra-limited deck of playing cards. Designed by Douglas Fuchs and art directed by Kevin Reylek, the entire deck is illustrated in a woodcut style.

Inspired by the genius work of Theodore DeLand from over a century ago, Kevin Reylek & Phill Smith have created a fun marked deck that is not only easy to learn, but easy to perform with. The deck features fully custom artwork from top to bottom. The bright pink tuck box opens sideways, just like a real donut box. The card backs have a full-bleed borderless design, covered in dozens of appetizing donuts. Utilizing a clock-style bite system along with color-coded icing, you'll be able to discern both the suit & value of any card in the deck just by glancing at the back. Because of the size of the marks and the color-based suit system, the deck can be read from quite a reasonable distance! What about the riffle test?! Phill & Kevin actually created the deck so that every donut on each card back changes. When you riffle through the cards like a flipbook, everything changes - making it impossible for an audience to discover the system. An instruction card is included so you can learn the markings right away. You'll also receive a video download where Kevin Reylek covers the features of the deck. There are also one-way markings on both the backs and the faces, empowering you to perform some diabolical effects. The faces feature a bright pink & chocolate brown color scheme, with sprinkles on the number cards. The court cards have been customized as bakery employees, ready for service. Two identical jokers with a donut mascot are included, as well as a double-backed gaff card for magic tricks. Of course, the cards handle like a dream. The red "Turandot" deck is the fourth in a series of six famous transformation playing card decks we plan to release... This fourth Cotta's almanac playing cards deck was originally published in 1809. There is no known evidence of any deck issued in 1808, and so this red almanac issued in 1809 is considered to be the fourth in a series.

Court card figures depict Arabs in various costumes, which could have been taken from sources of the seven climes (Persia, China/Turkestan, Khwârazm, Slavonia, North Africa, Byzantium, and India), which as well adds another historical value to its rarity.

Additionally to the series of Cotta's almanac decks, all influenced by notable authors, this one might also draw on aspects from another Schiller's work - especially the translation and his intriguing epic symbolic adaptation of Turandot, the famous commedia dell'arte (Italian comedy) play by Count Carlo Gozzi from 1762 after and originated in supposedly Persian story of Calaf's adventure in the theme of the Arabic and Persian tales from the collection (Thousand and One Day) Les Mille et un jours (1710–1712) by François Pétis de la Croix.

The artwork also may have been inspired by the Arab population that migrated to Germany or even studied in Tübingen where the Cotta's publishing house was founded. But mostly there was a friendship between Schiller, Goethe, Cotta, and Gozzi, who died in 1806, a year after Schiller in 1805, what might have been the true impulse.

The purple "Aeneid or Pantheon" deck is the fifth in a series of six famous transformation playing card decks we plan to release...

This fifth Cotta's almanac playing cards deck was originally published in 1810.

The court card figures depict various mythological characters, while the number cards include caricatures of famous people like Napoleon, and a variety of comical subjects.

Additionally to the series of Cotta's almanac decks, all influenced by notable authors, this one might also draw on aspects from another Schiller's poetic work - especially the unique translation from Vergil's Aeneid.

Schiller with his own style and effect had translated various parts at various times (his first translations of Aeneid appeared anonymously in the eleventh issue of the Swabian Magazine in 1780 under the title "Der Sturm auf Dem Tyrrhener Meer") and his light and congenial labor mostly continued to occupy him for a year or more after the break-down of his health (resulted in death in the year 1805, when blue Cotta's deck was originally issued for the first time), while he fully completed Book II - "Troy" (spring 1791) and Book IV - "Dido" (winter 1791), according to letters written to his friend Gottfried dated April 10th and October 24th, 1791.

The idea behind the concept of Cotta's transformation decks was to create a series of six decks on an annual basis from 1805-1811. The violet "Knightly Orders" 1811 almanac deck is the sixth in a series of six famous transformation playing card decks we planned to release...This sixth Cotta's almanac playing cards deck was originally published in 1811.

The court card figures depict members of various knightly orders and the characters are in the robes of various orders of real knighthood/damehood or spiritual orders, while the theme of number cards is romantic or even spiritual with a variety of subjects & sixteen of pip cards have scenes that can be considered illustrative of the four seasons.

Additionally to the series of Cotta's almanac decks, all influenced by notable authors, and bottom lined as somehow always mysteriously connected with German poetic genius Johann Christoph Friedrich (von) Schiller, this one might also draw on aspects from another Schiller's cosmopolitan thinker philosophical response work - especially when interfered with surveying public question about his quiet Masonic potential membership, but this has not been proven yet...
