Custom deck made for a Mexican restaurant in San Francisco

Gentlemen 52 playing card deck pays homage to all the splendor of growing hair from the chin, cheeks and upper lip. Thirteen distinctive facial hair styles comprise the deck.

Fifty four pictures of photos, cartoons, advertising posters, and other portrayals of people with beards and/or moustaches. Some are in full colour, some are in black and white. The backs show a crown and a moustache and beard in gold on black. They are one way. The jokers are different and show bearded women.

I started designing these cards last year, wanting to pay homage to some of the most inspiring yet underrated figures in musical history. The founding mothers and fathers of not just blues, but rock and pop as well. The recently departed Little Richard called Leadbelly "one of the foundations of music.” Not blues music. Music. Period. Their contribution to American culture is not recognised enough. These pioneers have long been held up as seminal figures within the world of folk, roots and blues music, but beyond that they are largely and shamefully ignored. In fact most people would not have even heard of Huddie Leadbetter or Sister Rosetta or Memphis Minnie. This is my small way of trying to keep their heritage alive.

Culminus aims to represent ultimate evil and ultimate good with two standalone deck designs, Infernum and Infiniti, where infernal devils are seeking to wreak havoc to neutral men, and ethereal guardians are trying to stop them. In its essence, Culminus symbolises the moral compass and ethic dilemmas that all monarchs have faced in history and time as saints and sinners. The concept of this card deck was from a documentary that I watched on Youtube which covers a subject on deep sea. In this Documentary, deep sea was compared to deep space because they are surprisingly similar and this fact leads me to imagine the marine animals in space. I tried to create a background that sea and space coexists in mysterious atmosphere. I spent days agonizing over how to organize all these as one design and finally I came up with a rising castle on a whale’s back.

The Danegeld (Danish tax/Dane tribute) was a tax raised to pay tribute to the Viking raiders to save a land from being ravaged. It was called the geld or gafol in eleventh-century sources.
