The Fig. 25 BookDeck is a deck of cards, meticulously designed around the most famous card book in History, The Expert at the Card table. The high quality and elegant deck comes in a unique, hand assembled card box, a replica to the classic book by S.W. Erdnase. The Standard version has a Linen Card Stock Book Cover with gold foil stamped cover title and spine. To continue the tribute to Erdnase, the cards appear to have been printed on sections of the pages from the original book, The Expert at the Card Table. The images have been balanced out and adjusted to give it a vintage tone, as well as keeping the card easy to read.

A New York Icon

Originally designed by Calvert Vaux, Tavern on the Green was built as a sheep fold in the 1880’s to house 700 Southdown sheep. The building was transformed into a restaurant in 1934 as part of a park renovation by Robert Moses. Reopened in 2014, the restaurant paid homage to their roots with inviting décor and wood paneling reminiscent of the original sheep fold.

The idea for this deck was conceived at the start of the coronavirus outbreak when it became apparent that COVID-19 was a much bigger threat than most of us thought. I approached Dane Valnes with the idea of a pandemic deck and the rest is history. What began as the Infected deck became CONTAGION, and after countless hours of collaboration and revising, the final product was created. We kept the original name as part of the deck's tag line, for its very purpose of encouraging the spread of its use during these days of isolation. It was our goal to foster excitement through the anticipation of its release and to potentially contaminate the homes of playing card users throughout the world, including game players, magicians, cardists and collectors. Even if you have to stay at home until further notice, you can still practice magic, Cardistry moves, play games and have fun! So GET INFECTED with the prospect of holding this deck in your hands, and all that you have to look forward to doing with it, when you receive it! A call for lightheartedness and pleasant distraction in this time of crisis was desperately needed but COVID-19 is still a risk to us all. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those affected and Dane and I plan to independently assist with relief efforts where we can. Decks were manufactured by the United States Playing Card Company on classic grade, standard Bicycle stock with air cushion finish in a fully custom standard C1S stock tuck. Card backs have been designed with classic thick borders and a fully custom, fully marked and secret one-way design. Card faces are standard Bicycle aside from the custom Ace of Spades and two different jokers, have been recolored to match the overall deck theme, and all court faces are fully custom and masked/unmasked on each side. The Queen of Clubs features an 8 of Clubs reveal and Daniel Madison's King of Diamonds holds his 9 of Clubs reveal. A duplicate 9 of Clubs will be included along with an ad card that, featuring the designers and marking system explanation on its face, DOUBLES as a gaff card on its back! My newest project is a 3 Deck Set that includes a new version of my popular Dragon-inspired design (the Draconians), and a pair of all new designs - the Knights Decks. ALL Decks, AND the 3-Deck Case for the Kickstarter-Exclusive GILDED Set, will be printed by Legends Playing Card Co., with their TAIWAN PRINTER (and with their Classic Finish).

I've always been a fan of Fantasy literature. Some of my favorite authors include J.R.R. Tolkien, George R.R. Martin and Raymond E. Feist. The original Draconians were a nod to the captivating Dragons in their stories. I think of the Knights Decks as spinoff designs of the Draconians. They're the brave Knights that risk life and limb to protect their lands from the dangerous Dragons!

The Tuck Boxes for both Knights Decks will be printed on a shiny Silver Foil material. Truly a pair of Knights in shining armour! Each Tuck will feature a different 4-Color Process design that's printed directly onto the Silver Foil material (and an Embossing Stretch Goal). If you've ever seen the Tuck Box for my buddy Max's Bicycle Metal Deck with CPC, you know how the final effect should look (click here to see the Metal Deck's Tuck). The Knights Tucks should look amazing!!

The designs for the Knights Tucks incorporate a Chainmail background for the Fury, and an Etched Armour background for the Rage. The Fury Deck features a green accented shield and a Stag Head for his crest. The Rage Deck features an amber accented shield and a Bull Head for his crest. Each design includes its Knight's preferred style of weaponry - Battle Mace for the Rage Knight, Medieval Axe for the Fury Knight (sorry fellow GOT fans, no Ice-Tipped Spear). For a closer look, here's a couple links to the Rage Knight and Fury Knight Tuck flats.

The Fury Knight Back Card features a Chainmail background and a head-to-head layout of the Fury Knight's shield, Stag Head crest and Medieval Axe. The Face Cards for the Fury Deck have a metal texture with green full-bleed coloring. The PIPS have a silver metallic look, and are inlaid with Rivets. The Spades and Clubs have full coverage of green throughout. The Hearts and Diamonds have large center areas with amber coloring. The green and amber color variances help with reading between the suits and overall playability. I used an older Courts Set for the Jacks, Queens and Kings. Cuban Missile Crisis: 13 Days on the Precipice. This deck commemorates the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962, when the world was at the brink of a full scale nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union over nuclear missile deployments in Cuba. The world has never before nor since been so close to the precipice of such a global nuclear catastrophe. And hopefully never will again. The deck commemorates the key players in the Cold War confrontation in the aces of the deck (President John F Kennedy, Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, Soviet 1st Secretary Nikita Khrushchev and Cuban 1st Secretary Fidel Castro). The jokers captures two key elements central to the nuclear confrontation: the U-2 spy plane which revealed the Soviet's plans to station nuclear missiles in Cuba, and the mobile missile launchers that were being deployed by the Soviets. The Cuban Missile Crisis theme is embedded within the back-card design. Notably, the U-2, soviet missiles and the Russians working in Cuba with Castro's regime. Lessons were learned from this confrontation included the sobering realization about how close the world had come to catastrophe and that efforts should be made to avoid it happening again. This crisis also led to the establishment of the Moscow-Washington hotline in an effort to avoid some of the misunderstanding and miscommunication that characterized the US-Soviet exchanges over the course of the confrontation. Once upon a time, there was a marvelous city in which lived a wise, advanced civilization that was rumoured to have descended from the gods. Their knowledge and technological progress had no match in the whole world. With its incomparable architecture, lush nature, and wealth, the city was a bright beacon shining its light forward while the rest of the world watched in envy. However, Atlantians were not all kind, and soon, pride, greed, and envy took over their hearts. Soon, the entire city was filled with wrath, which brought upon them the anger from the gods. They decided to punish this rotten city and sentenced it to immediate demise. The city of Atlantis sunk deep underwater and its mysteries, never to be found again.

The legend of Atlantis has mystified many people, starting from Greek philosophers to conspiracy theorists nowadays. Our designer Pedro Oyarbide was no different and decided to pay tribute to this magnificent legend by creating a new deck in two versions. One of them, called the Rise Edition, shows Atlantis in its full bloom, shortly before its disappearance. The second one, Sink Edition, shows the city as we imagine it now, resting forever in the depths of the sea.
