After having created several modern original decks of playing cards I have recently been inspired from playing cards from the past. And in this campaign I will present you 2 of my favorites; the Vanity and Faro. Both of these deck were originally produced in the late 19th century. The Vanity deck is based off of the famous "Vanity Fair" transformation deck copyrighted in 1895. The Faro deck is based off of the Russel & Morgan Squared Faro first printed in 1887. The Faro deck was supplied to casinos for the game of faro and is more of a "workers" deck while the Vanity deck would be considered more of a "novelty" deck. This deck was a KickStarter project, titled '1883 Murphy Varnish Transformation Playing Cards Restoration' (also known by the tuck name 'The M.V. Card'), it was a transformation style deck and a restoration of the often sought after deck known as The Murphy Varnish Transformation Playing Cards which were originally printed in 1883 by Andrew Dougherty. It was an advertising deck for the Murphy Varnish company from Newark New Jersey, which was founded in 1865 by Franklin Murphy, the former Governor of New Jersey.  

This was a full restoration and not just a simple replica that was printed by USPCC on Bee stock and Linoid finish, there were 3 versions of the deck available.

1: The Standard: A recreation of the original in a modern tuck box. The original had a blank back, but for the standard the front and back of the tuck will be identical.  It also features a tuck seal.

2: The Limited: (Limited to 1883 copies) Using the original design I added some of the color from the deck. It will also be printed in a vintage long tongue tuck box and wrapped in a custom paper wrap. Sealed with individually numbered stamps. This deck comes with a stainless steel Ace of spades numbered cert.

3. The Original Release: This deck is done as closely to the original 2 piece box as we can do it. The back of the box is blank, there is a stamp on the inside of the box that is individually numbered and a number stamp seal on the back of the deck as well. This deck comes with a brass numbered metal ace of spades cert.

Messymod, short for Messy Modernism, is a minimal approach to graphic-design conceived by Los Angeles based creative team, TRÜF. Born from their love of geometry, pattern, white space, Bauhaus, Miró and perhaps a little too much caffeine.

After being introduced to their work earlier this year we knew right away we had to collaborate on a deck. Seven months later and we couldn't be more happy with the outcome.

The playing cards feature a completely custom design in typical Messymod fashion which can be described as minimal, modern, graphic, quirky, stylized, grotesque, delightful and just plain weird.

Bursting with vibrant colors and raw animal magnetism, the savage design of this deck was inspired by the lush jungles of Africa. Each custom illustrated card features iconic flora and fauna from the Zulu wilderness. Monkeys, parrots and jungle cats run wild throughout the pack. The jungle tuck case was printed on an antique Heidelberg letterpress to give the colors a vintage "washed" look that compliments the eye-catching graphics inside.
