ABOUT THIS DECK

This is visually based upon mid to late 1800's design and illustration with a dash of Monty Python-esque humor. All previous decks, produced under his seal fig. 23, took their inspiration from artistic and historical references linked to big cities such as New York, Paris or London. This time, the deck refers to the state of Montana whence Stephen has recently moved. Montana’s culture is rooted in the 1800’s when it was a prosperous mining area. Stephen wanted to mix the vintage style of the time with hipster fashion in a fun humorous way. For this, he has created a multitude of moving parts that are animated in his particular work in motion. With a flip-book movement, the cards reveal a curious animation showing also the completely customised pips. The flip book animation shows the growing of a fantastic mustache via the moving gears and dials in the head of the gentleman featured on the back of the tuck box. The 'fig. 23' logo beneath him is also animated. All cards follow this animation, and the court cards have a king's crown, a queen's crown, and a knight's helmet, respectively. There are two different full colour jokers in an embellished Victorian style. One is two-way and predominantly red-brown, featuring a Victorian gentleman looking in a mirror and seeing a devil. The other is one way and predominantly blue, featuring a head of the devil. The backs are one-way as per the front of the tuck box. The finish is smooth, and the stock has a good spring.
